The School Counseling Program at Richlands Elementary School promotes the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students grades 3-5. Below is a list of the programs and services provided.
Individual Counseling I meet with students one-on-one or with small groups of students who share similar concerns. Students may self-refer, be in the middle of a crisis/emergency, or be referred by a teacher, administrator, or parent. Although I have a degree in counseling, I can not provide long term therapy to students. What students tell me is confidential unless I feel there is a risk of hurting self or others, someone is hurting them, or they give me permission to disclose what is discussed.
Small Group Counseling Small groups are a great way for students to discuss their own issues and feelings regarding a certain topic, and to see that there are other students their age experiencing something similar. Parent permission may be required, so if a student is interested or invited to participate, please check to see if a permission form was sent home, signed, and returned.
Classroom Core Curriculum I sometimes teach school counseling lessons during classroom time.. These topics can include character education and college exploration, and additional topics that include (but are not limited to): exploring personal interests and abilities, career exploration, goal setting and achievement, problem solving skills, study skills, respecting others' differences, recognizing and managing stress, bullying, effective communication, understanding emotions and appropriate expression of emotions, and practicing self control.
Consultation I am happy to discuss any concerns from teachers, administrators, parents and community members. I may be reached via email, phone call, or stopping by the school during normal hours.
